Ceil Chapman - Dress Architect to the Stars

by Blue Wren Vintage |

There are many amazing designers of fashion from the 1950s, and one of the most consistently exceptional designers of this era is Ceil Chapman. Known for being Marilyn Monroe's favourite designer, Ceil started from humble beginnings and worked hard to create a successful and enterprising business.

With few exceptions, the Ceil Chapman designs from the 1950s have several hallmarks, that when combined create an effortless exterior with a structured, well made and thought out interior. Ceil's designs often feature draping that curves over the bust, waist and hip and is designed to accentuate the female form. Ceil took great care in selecting high quality fabrics, which often feature embellishments such as sparkling bugle beads, rhinestones and embroidery or applique.

However, Marilyn Monroe was not Ceil Chapman's only celebrity customer. Ceil was also a favourite of Elizabeth Taylor and Ceil designed the wedding dress for Ms Taylor's wedding to Nicky Hilton in 1950.

Ceil's garments from the 1950s truly rank up there as the most exquisite pieces of the era. To purchase a Ceil Chapman garment in the 1950s would cost around US$1,000 or the equivalent of four months' salary for an average person.

Owning a Ceil Chapman from this era is truly an honour and a privilege. Blue Wren Vintage has been fortunate enough to source many beautiful garments by this designer and works very hard to restore wounded or damaged items to return them to their former beauty.

More about this designer to come in future blog posts.
