SOPHIE GIMBEL was a prominent designer during the 1950s and 1960s where she was known to design very high end garments, which were sold at the exclusive "Salon Moderne" at Saks Fifth Avenue. According to Wikipedia, "Gowns designed by Gimbel were known for their simplicity, elegance, and use of expensive fabrics".
This beautiful piece from the 1950s is a fine example of the quality, care and artistry that went into the design and production of these stunning garments.
Made from a soft, cascading silk, this beautiful piece is a light cream colour and features beautiful slightly abstract roses in shades of pink. This beauty was a restoration project and has now been returned to her former beauty. As a result of this restoration, her waist stay had to be removed (it had been cut as this dress was found as a 22 waist), her label was originally attached to the waist stay (see photo) but has been moved to the inside of the rear collar. The label is original to this dress.
She is lined in a matching off-white lining which is lined from the under bust into the skirt and she features a stunning scooped neckline, capped sleeves and she has a soft bow to the centre of the bust area. She has princess seaming on both her bodice and skirt, and she features a feature panel which runs down the bodice and into the skirt, which also conceals two pockets.
She was previously shortened so she has been returned to her original length, her nylon zipper (not original to the dress) has also been removed and replaced with an era appropriate metal zipper. She has been extensively stain treated and there is one persistent spot that has not lifted, however this is not obvious as it is quite light in colour and at the rear of the dress at the waist area. If you wear a belt or ribbon sash you will not even see this. Upon examining this dress in very bright light I also found one small brownish area inside one of the rose flowers which I believe would not even be noticed when worn.
As mentioned above, she was significantly smaller when first found, and she has been returned to her original size. If you look closely you can see the needle holes around the seams where she was let out, but this is not obvious and would likely not be noticed when being worn. She also has some mild discolouration in some of her inner seams but this cannot be observed when worn.
